Description

The Basics Principles of Energy (BPE) is an introductory module to more advanced training in energy and covers energy in its various forms, energy units, principles of electricity, thermal energy principles and heat transfer.

The context of the course addresses the basic principles of electricity and energy including the various forms of energy in chemical, thermal, mechanical and electrical energy including electricity i.t.o. voltage, current, power, demand, direct and alternating current, resistive loads, conductive loads, capacitive loads, synchronous machines. Describing the units of energy, metric system, power equivalents, power and energy units i.t.o, the difference between electrical, mechanical and thermal energy, boiler capacity and heat energy production. Basic calculations demonstrating the relationship between power, voltage, current, power factor in ac circuits, calculations i.t.o. relationship between electrical energy, average demand and time, average vs instantaneous demand and metering. Thermal energy principles, temperature, pressure, heat capacity i.t.o. mass, temperature change, material/ substance type, sensible and latent heat i.t.o. evaporation, condensation, moist, steam tables for heat transfer, psychrometric charts for determining humidity of air. Principles of heat transfer i.t.o. conduction, convection, thermal radiation, basic heat loss.
