17 Energy Efficiency Interns are starting their journey in the energy industry this week under
guidance of experienced mentors in the industry.
The Limpopo Economic Development, Environment and Tourism (LEDET) department and the Energy
Training Foundation (EnTF) have embarked on the second round of a project to upskill Limpopo
Province-based youth to become employable in the energy industry.
backgrounds kicked off the project in July 2017 at the University of Venda (UNIVEN) with EWSETA
basic training in energy and conducting an energy audit. The week was followed with ISO50001
Energy Management Manual compilation training, and practical sessions where audits were
conducted under guidance of mentors at the vast array of buildings on the UNIVEN campus. Excel
tools for analysis, as well as auditing tools were used and demonstrated to embed the knowledge
taught in theory.
The aim of the program is to provide tiered training from the basics in energy up to the advanced
training conducted as the Certified Energy Manager (CEM) program with the workplace
opportunities providing the necessary work experience to be able to cope with the international
Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) CEM examination. CEM is the flagship qualification of the AEE
that culminates experience, existing qualifications, and knowledge recognised through the 4-hour
examination that has to be passed with 70% into a qualification that is recognised in 105 countries
with over 30,000 qualified professionals that maintain certification.
EnTF trainers Louis Lagrange and Jaco Homann, together with EnTF energy engineer Albert Williams
spent two weeks with the students putting them through intensive training, with homework and
class-based exercises and assignments, as well as preparation reading.
Students spent 3 days being interviewed across the Gauteng Province by prospective employers who
had expressed interest through South Africa’s AEE Professional Network the South African Energy
Efficiency Confederation (SAEEC). Students were matched to suitable employers and start their
employment in the energy industry in August this year.
Companies that have reached out to the students on this program to mentor and provide relevant
experience in the industry are Afrox, Denel Aviation, Supreme Spring, DFR Engineers, Evolve Today,
Bidvest Facilities Management, BBE Energy, Energy Cybernetics, Unitrans and the University of
Venda. This program would not be possible without these corporate contributions of time and
attention to develop the youth.
During the next 3 months students will be submitting their EWSETA assignment for assessment as
preparation for their CEM training. At the end of the year the students will return to UNIVEN to be
put through the rigorous CEM training, and attempt to write the gruelling examination. The syllabus
taught in CEM will equip the students ultimately to contribute to the companies they are placed with
for the rest of the term of employment.
At the same time the EnTF have been running a train the trainer program with UNIVEN on the
EWSETA unit standard training, with 4 prospective trainers from UNIVEN being put through the
same paces at the students.
LEDET hopes to be able to lure the developed students back to the Limpopo Province with the aim of
ensuring the Province’s Energy Strategy to be realised through using local skills.
