Prof LJ Grobler obtained his BEng (Mech), MEng (Mech) and PhD from the University Pretoria. He is also a Certified Energy Manager (CEM), a Certified Measurement and Verification Professional (CMVP) and a Professional Engineer (Pr.Eng).
He has gained extensive experience in all facets of energy management and has audited and assessed many commercial and industrial energy systems with hands-on involvement in over 300 projects. As a trainer he has trained over 650 CEMs for the Southern African region. In total Prof Grobler has conducted over 30 CEM training sessions, over 50 energy audit training courses, more than 10 core energy management training courses, and over 15 energy management awareness training courses since 1995.
Prof Grobler currently holds the position of Dean, Department of Mechanical and Material Engineering at North West University, founding member and Director of Energy Cybernetics and the Energy Training Foundation and the Past-President of the SAEE, as well as the first South African to be a President of the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE). He currently also holds the position of AEE Assistant Director for International Member Development for the Sub-Saharan African Region.

Albert is an energy engineer with 12 years of energy auditing, energy management, and energy training experience. He qualified as a Certified Energy Manager (CEM®) in 2008 and has been designated as an international CEM instructor by the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE). He is also a Certified Energy Auditor (CEA®), a Sub-Saharan Africa CEA instructor, a Certified Measurement and Verification Professional (CMVP®), and a Certified Renewable Energy Professional (REP®). To date he has completed more than 130 energy audits, including 15 international audits.
Albert is an international Compressed Air Systems Optimisation (CASO) training facilitator and certified CASO expert for the United Nations (UNIDO). Albert has conducted over 40 CASO assessments and has helped 33 organisations identify CASO savings worth $26.8 million (105 GWh p.a.) with paybacks of less than two years.
Albert has facilitated more than 40 training courses to ± 640 trainees. He is a preferred technical trainer for the Sub-Saharan Africa region for various energy training courses for the Energy Training Foundation; the regional training provider for the AEE. He has worked in Iran, Macedonia, Egypt, Kenya, Uganda, the UAE, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and the USA.
Albert holds an Industrial Engineering degree. He lives in Pretoria with his wife of seven years, Elisma – a registered psychometrist. In his spare time, Albert enjoys chess, birding, and long distance running – he has finished over 50 marathons; including seven Comrades Marathons, six Loskop Ultras, and an Ironman.
Louis Lagrange is the lead course trainer for Certified Energy Manager (CEM), Certified Energy Auditor (CEA), Fundamentals of Energy Management Training (FEMT) and Building Energy Audit Training (BEAT) for the Energy Training Foundation.
Louis holds a Masters degree in Engineering from the University of Pretoria, with 27 years of experience in energy related fields and has focussed the last 6 years on Strategic and Scenario Planning, Energy Efficiency, Energy Optimisation and Energy Management.
Louis has developed the highly acclaimed Fundamentals of Energy Management Training (FEMT) course, providing two critical skills, namely (i) for attending company managers and financial officers to work aligned with technical energy managers, and (ii) practical fundamental technical skills for engineers venturing into the energy industry.
From this FEMT basis Louis uses his Toastmasters International Advanced Bronze communication skills for the practical BEAT training that culminates in a completed fundamental walk-through energy audit report.
Gustav Radloff is the Managing Director and co-founder of Energy Cybernetics. He holds an Honours Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Pretoria and is certified with the Association of Energy Engineers in the USA as a Certified Energy Manager (CEM).
Gustav has collaborated on several international publications and serves as a committee member on the SABS ISO Technical Committee 242. He was the chairman of the working group responsible for the development of a South African Measurement and Verification Standard (SATS 50 010) and currently holds the position as Chairman of the ISO working group for an international Measurement & Verification standard, which is part of the development of ISO 50 001. Gustav was selected by almost 50 countries for this position as he has more than 17 years’ experience in the energy management field, including Measurement & Verification and energy auditing.
Christo van der Merwe is the course trainer for the Measurement and Verification Training – South Africa (MVST-sa) and Certified Measurement and Verification Professional (CMVP®) training course for the Energy Training Foundation (EnTF).
Christo has is Masters in Mechanical Engineering, is a Certified Measurement and Verification Professional (CMVP), a Certified Energy Manager (CEM), and a full professional member of the MVCSA. Christo is the Technical and Operational Manager of Veritek, one of the few SANAS accredited M&V specialist entities. He has gained vast experience in the M&V industry over the past 15 years by being involved in over 400 M&V projects within the Eskom DSM M&V processes, 12i and 12L tax incentive, DoE financed municipal energy efficiency projects, industrial and commercial load control and energy efficiency, residential energy efficiency, including CFL distribution, HVAC, lighting retrofits, demand shedding, water heating retrofits, water pumping, amongst others.
He has assisted Namibia in defining their basics for their M&V industry while also being the preferred M&V professional along with the Veritek inspection entity to a number of large profile clients such as BBEnergy, Mediclinic, KPMG, Anglo-American, Sibanye Gold, ABSA and others.
Richard brings over 18 years of sustainability management, water strategy and progressive water efficiency and conservation practice experience. His experience comes from previous roles within the mining and consulting sector where he has dealt with all facets of water management from strategy development, regulatory authorisations and risk assessment to operational implementation, auditing, measurement and verification and reporting.
He has worked for multiple companies and organisations with varied interests including, a FTSE 100 Mining company (Anglo American plc) and has founded his own consulting firm Garner Sustainability Consulting Services (Pty) Ltd. Mr. Garner is an experienced professional has been involved in water efficiency performance since 2010. He is active within several water associations and is frequently invited to speak on the topic of water management. Before beginning his career in consulting, Mr. Garner was the Environmental Manager for Anglo Coal and Group Water Manager at Anglo American. He attended the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa where he obtained his Masters in Science.
BSc (Physics, Mathematics), M Sc (Physics), PhD (Physics)
Frederik Vorster is a physicist with PhD specialising in photovoltaics. He teaches Physics and Engineering subjects at the NMMU and is closely involved with the management and development of various projects at of the Centre for Energy Research. He is currently a Senior Lecturer at the NMMU and actively involved with supervision of several Physics and Engineering masters and doctoral students.
Dr Vorster’s broad research interests include solar energy, heat engines and micro wind turbine development. His principal area of specialisation lies in concentrator and flat plate photovoltaics, specifically the development on new characterisation techniques for photovoltaic materials, modules and systems.
He consulted to a variety of industry and public sectors in South Africa in the fields of photovoltaics and domestic solar water heating.
Dr Vorster is the trainer of the NMMU’s Photovoltaic Technologies training course which is hosted by EnTF around the country, and by NMMU in Port Elizabeth.
MSc Mech Eng
Denis van Es has his BSc and MSc in Mechanical Engineering with over 43 years technical and managerial experience in mechanical services and energy management within South Africa, continental Africa and the UK. He has strong organizational, conceptual and business development skills and is experienced in training, mentoring and supervision of personnel. He is an experienced academic in the field of energy efficiency, including the preparation of guidelines for the Clean Development Mechanism, and is an external examiner for post graduate students at both the University of Cape Town and the University of Stellenbosch. He has an international accreditation as an M&V trainer and is a Certified Measurement & Verification Professional. He is accredited under a US Department of Energy programme for industrial energy audits.
Denis van Es was a member of the SABS technical committee working on ISO 50 000 and is qualified at expert level in Energy Management Systems. He was a contributor to a recently published Global Energy Assessment, focusing on industrial energy efficiency in South Africa. Further international activity includes being a contributing delegate at a G8 conference in Oxford, England. He works as a consultant to industry in the area of resource efficiency, especially energy efficiency, including implementation under the Eskom Integrated Demand Management programme. He is a registered Professional Engineer in South Africa and as a Chartered Engineer in the UK. He is a Member of several engineering institutions and is a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.
Denis currently applies himself mainly to training in the fields of Energy Management Systems, as well as Measurement & Verification and is an AEE and EVO accredited trainer for CMVP.
PhD, MSc, CEM, REP
Sean Poole PhD mechanical engineering focusing on small wind turbine blade design. He is a Certified Renewable Energy Professional (REP) and the approved AEE trainer for REP for the Southern African region, as well as a Certified Energy Manager (CEM). Sean manages various energy related research projects and lectures renewable energy short courses at NMMU. He has been involved with renewable energy research at NMMU since 2013. Another interest of his is prototyping and concept design which has lead to the founding of his company ProVolution.
Sean conducts REP in Johannesburg, as well as in Port Elizabeth where the course includes various renewable energy site visits.
